What agency inspects restaurants in Florida?

Routine regulation and inspection of restaurants is conducted by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The Department of Health is responsible for investigation and control of food-borne illness outbreaks associated with all food establishments.

How do I report a dirty restaurant in Florida?

What does all that terminology in Florida restaurant inspections mean?

Basic violations are those considered against best practices.

A warning is issued after an inspector documents violations that must be corrected by a certain date or within a specified number of days from receipt of the inspection report.

An administrative complaint is a form of legal action taken by the division. Insufficient compliance after a warning, a pattern of repeat violations or existence of serious conditions that warrant immediate action may result in the division initiating an administrative complaint against the establishment. Says the division website: "Correcting the violations is important, but penalties may still result from violations corrected after the warning time was over."

An emergency order — when a restaurant is closed by the inspector — is based on an immediate threat to the public. Here, the Division of Hotels and Restaurants director has determined that the establishment must stop doing business and any division license is suspended to protect health, safety or welfare of the public.

A 24-hour call-back inspection will be performed after an emergency closure or suspension of license.

Two century-old home furnishings retailers are coming down.

Seven months after it was acquired by Conn's HomePlus, furniture retailer Badcock Home Furniture & More, founded in Mulberry in 1904, is closing all of its more than 300 stores. That includes about 80 in Florida, including its Fort Walton Beach store. The company verified this in a comment on its Facebook page Friday.

On Facebook, the Goodman family from the Fort Walton Beach store posted a statement on Sunday. It reads:

"Dear valued customers, friends and family:

"After serving our beloved community for three generations, we are saddened to announce the closing of our furniture store, Badcock Furniture of Fort Walton Beach, FL. This decision is due to the unfortunate bankruptcy of our parent corporation and is not due to any issues with our store. We deeply appreciate your loyalty and support over the years. It has been an honor to help furnish your homes and be a part of your lives. We invite you to shop with us one last time and take advantage of our liquidation sale. Your support means the world to us, and we hope to see you before we close our doors. Thank you for the memories and for being a part of our journey.

"With gratitude, The Goodman Family"

W.S. Badcock, which operates in the southeastern U.S. under the name Badcock Home Furniture & More, was acquired in December 2023 by home goods retailer Conn's, giving the Texas-based chain more than 550 stores across 15 states between the two brands.

Is Conn's HomePlus closing?

On Tuesday the 134-year-old Conn's announced the company was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and closing at least 73 HomePlus locations across 13 states.

Florida will lose the most, with Conn's HomePlus shuttering 18 of the state's 21 locations. All of the Badcock stores will be closing.

Store liquidation sales for both brands will have starting discounts of 30-50% across in-store and online merchandise, including name-brand furniture, home electronics and appliances, according to a company press release. All items must be sold, all sales are final. Store furnishings, fixtures, and equipment are also available for sale, the release said.

Why is Badcock going out of business?

Conn's HomePlus said in its fourth-quarter earnings call in April that total revenue was down 7.8% year over year and the company posted a net loss of nearly $77 million for the year. Shares for the company have dropped more than 90% for the year and the company received a delisting notice from Nasdaq a few weeks ago, CNN reported.

This comes during a year when Walgreens closed locations, Walmart closed all 51 of its health centers, restaurant chains like Red Lobster, Tijuana Flats, TGI Fridays and Hooters announced closings and retail outlets such as Big Lots, rue21. Express, Best Buy, Macy's, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar all announced bankruptcies or location reductions.

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. --The influx of dogs being brought in is a problem affecting animal shelters across the nation.

Panhandle Animal Welfare Society in Fort Walton Beach isn't exempt, as close to 200 dogs are in the shelter right now.

PAWS officials have capacity worries as they are having to put the influx of dogs outside.

"The animals that we have here are amazing." said Tracy Kinsley, PAWS community development director. "They just want love just like everybody else."

PAWS welcomes dogs and cats with open arms to their shelter, providing the animals with all of the necessary tools to live happy and healthy lives. Still...

"The shelter is not a place for any animal," Kinsley said. "Ideally, we want them in a home."

Most of the dogs they've been receiving are strays.

There are close to 200 dogs in the shelter's care right now.

"Which is a little bit more than we would like," Kinsley said. "We actually are resulting in having to put the big, tall -- they're not really cages or wire crates, but just they're going to be out in the elements."

With the weather heating up and hurricane season starting in less than two weeks, the shelter is concerned about capacity issues.

"That's our last resort unfortunately," Kinsley said. "We just have a huge influx of strays and we're a little bit worried about the capacity that we have here with the dogs."

The shelter is receiving even more dogs in a way that would break any animal lovers heart.

"What actually has tipped us over to having more animals on site is that there's an ongoing cruelty-neglect case that we started taking animals in last week," Kinsley said. "So that was just our tipping point."

PAWS is not able to give away too much information because of an ongoing investigation.

But in a Facebook post, the non-profit organization says, "PAWS has rescued several severely malnourished and abused dogs and discovered just as many deceased animals."

"We're doing everything we can to make sure these animals are getting all the extra love and attention that they need to know that not all humans are bad," Kinsley said.

She's making a dire plea for help.

"We're just plea-ing to the community to step up and help us out," she said. "Help the animals out and get some of these dogs and cats into homes. Whether it's fostering or adoption, we just need the help right now."

The shelter says fostering a dog is a great way to support.

Adoption fees have been sponsored for animals one-year and older for the next two weeks. For puppies and one-year and younger, the fee is $25.

"There's nothing better than watching a family walk in, find their true love and watching that animal walk home or leave the facility to their forever home," Kinsley said. "That's why we do what we do."

According to Accuweather, there's a low risk of cloud cover in Destin and Fort Walton Beach on Monday.

"Overall at this time, we're expecting much of Florida will be dry on Monday" because of a system of high pressure off the Carolinas, said Tyler Roys, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. However, increased cloud cover is possible over the state, especially across Central and South Florida, from Jacksonville south to Miami.

"The more northwest you go looks to be the best chance for less restrictions view of the eclipse," Roys said.

The forecast can change, though.

"There could be less clouds along the peninsula of Florida as we get more information on where the high pressure is," Roys said.
