Miami FL enter their first game of the campaign looking to live up to some big pre-season expectations.

The Hurricanes started fast but fell away during the 2023 season, but after some big offseason recruitment many experts are predicting they challenge for a College Football Playoff place.

That would be in stark contrast to last time around, when they started 0-4 but lost five of their final eight regular season games.

Miami FL’s highlights were a 48-33 victory over ranked Texas A&M and a 28-20 success against Clemson, while the low point was an infamous loss to Georgia Tech.

The Hurricanes wrapped up the campaign by taking part in the Pinstripe Bowl, where they lost 31-24 to Rutgers.

Florida come into the 2024 season looking to improve on a 5-7 campaign that saw them miss out on a Bowl Game.

The Gators dropped their season opener in 2023, but enjoyed a run of five wins in six games that propelled them into the rankings for a few weeks.

The highlight of that sequence was a 29-16 upset of #11 ranked Tennessee in the middle of September.

Florida’s last win during that sequence was a 41-39 victory at South Carolina, which was followed by five straight wins.

The Gators faced ranked teams in four of those games – a run that included a 43-20 defeat to #1 Georgia and a 24-15 loss to #5 Florida State.

Verdict

It is a make-or-break year for Miami FL head coach Mario Cristobal, but things look promising.

The roster is stronger and they have upgraded considerably at quarterback, so we like the Hurricanes’ chances of silencing ‘The Swamp’.

A six-week ban on abortion went into effect in Florida on May 1, 2024. Thankfully, a proposed constitutional amendment to protect abortion access will appear before voters on Florida’s November ballot.

Setting aside the preposterousness of what is effectively a blanket ban on abortion, the current six-week ban legislation is rife with omissions and ambiguities, which leaves medical providers at a loss and the health of their patients in grave jeopardy.

There are several such ambiguities within the defined terms of the law. “Fatal fetal abnormality,” for example, is defined as “a terminal condition that, in reasonable medical judgment, regardless of the provision of life-saving medical treatment, is incompatible with life outside the womb and will result in death upon birth or imminently thereafter.”

But how imminent is “imminently thereafter”? There are numerous medical conditions that are incompatible with life but have a survival range of mere seconds to childhood, and it is impossible to predict with any certainty where within that range each case will fall.

Many of these conditions are also impossible to diagnose until an amniocentesis or the anatomy scan of the fetus, which cannot be completed prior to 15 weeks and 18 weeks of gestation, respectively. On the very first day of my Labor and Delivery rotation in medical school, I encountered a patient pregnant with a baby with holoprosencephaly, a congenital defect where the brain fails to develop normally. Most afflicted babies do not survive beyond early infancy.

Our patient was forced to carry to term, endure the hardships and not immaterial risks of labor, and witness her baby die on its second day of life. Would her case qualify as a “fatal fetal abnormality”? Was her baby’s death “imminent” enough for legislators?

An exception to the time limit on terminations is granted to “save the pregnant woman’s life or avert a serious risk of imminent substantial and irreversible physical impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman other than a psychological condition.”

Frustratingly, this carve out does not adequately consider the various potential circumstances. For example, a family member was diagnosed with breast cancer while she was pregnant. She was, thankfully, late enough in her third trimester that her healthcare team was able to induce labor shortly thereafter to deliver a healthy baby, while beginning her cancer treatment as early as possible.

But what about those unfortunate women who receive a cancer diagnosis earlier in pregnancy, but not early enough to terminate within the legal limit? Must they be forced to continue their pregnancies, even though deferring treatment diminishes their likelihood of surviving cancer? Again, the margins of “imminent” are unclear.

The scenarios discussed are but a handful of the numerous ones implicated, drawn mostly from personal exposure. Regardless of one’s moral and religious beliefs, there are medical realities that cannot be dismissed.

What lawmakers fail to understand, or perhaps willfully ignore, is that most later term abortions are driven not by a wanton disregard for human life, but rather by the most tragic and heartbreaking of medical circumstances.

Typically, the law is composed of both legislation and ensuing case law, which addresses the nuances of such legislation in order to resolve ambiguities in the application of the legislation.

But in the case of pregnancy termination in Florida, the stakes are so significant and the penalty so steep, that healthcare providers are naturally unwilling to be the sacrificial lambs required to determine the boundaries of the law, even if they believe in their “reasonable medical judgment” that their actions would be in compliance with the law.

Without case law to fill in the holes, there is an effective stalemate on abortion care in Florida, even within the confines of the written law. The glaring omissions and manifold ambiguities within the legislation belie at best negligence on the part of legislators with respect to their basic civic duties, and at worst a cruel cunning aimed at utilizing uncertainty as a hefty deterrent. Either alternative is unacceptable.

MIAMI - What was once Hurricane Debby, now downgraded to a tropical storm, has caused flight delays and cancellations at Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for a second day.

As of 4 p.m., there were 248 delays and 155 cancellations at Miami International Airport. At FLL, there were 212 delays and 127 cancellations.

Some stranded travelers slept in the airport's hallways while others booked nearby hotels. Many spent long hours in customer service lines trying to figure out what was next.

"It's very inconvenient because when you're traveling with kids, you're tired, they're cranky, they're like upset, like they don't understand, they're small children. The closest day to go home probably is going to be Tuesday," said Nelsy Fernandez, whose flight was canceled on Sunday.

Doug Bickerson arrived at MIA on Sunday.

"Well I've been stuck at the airport pretty much," he said.

Bickerson said he spent the night there in a chair, hoping he could catch a standby flight. He said there's still no clear path home.

"Hopefully, I'll get a standby flight tonight. If not, I'm leaving in the morning definitely," he said.

Iaroslava Sokolova had spent 24 hours traveling from Dubai to Miami when the storm canceled her flight.

"So we waited in a long queue for an entire day, an entire night and all the hotels were booked. So it was a big journey. Yeah, we're so tired and so slow right now," said Sokolova.

Miami International spokesman Jack Valera said those with flights need to check with their airline before coming to the airport in case they need to make other travel arrangements. For those who have confirmed flights, get there early.

"It's packed, try to come three hours in advance. If you're taking a domestic or an international flight, give yourself time to come into the airport, look for the gate and go through security before boarding the plane. Just make sure you come with a lot of time to the airport," he said.

Clint Henderson from online travel news site, The Points Guy, suggests passengers trying to get an earlier flight should try to book with another airline or try to fly in or out of an alternate airport. He said because delays and cancellations were caused by the weather, airlines do not have to offer vouchers for added expenses. He said if you booked with a credit card, check to see if it included trip insurance.

"That's why I love booking with a credit card that has AAA and cancellation insurance. Because sometimes, even with the airline won't help you, sometimes that credit card company insurance will cover your additional costs," Henderson said.

The National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. advisory on Monday downgraded Debbie to a tropical storm. Even so, it could bring record-setting rains, catastrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surges as it moves across the northern part of Florida.
