Hurricane Debby made landfall as a Category 1 storm about 7 a.m. Monday. It made landfall at Steinhatchee, in Florida's Big Bend region, and its bands brought wind, rain and power outages to Marion County.
How much rain did Ocala get during Hurricane Debby?
Marion is a big county, so rainfall levels vary from place to place. The Marion County Sheriff's Office's Division of Emergency Management said the highest rainfall total it saw recorded on Monday was 7.89 inches at Candler.
The National Water Prediction Service, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has a mapping tool that shows estimated precipitation. For the city of Ocala, rainfall was estimated at 1.3 inches to 1.5 inches on Sunday and 4.67 inches to 5.06 inches on Monday. The estimates were as high as 8 inches of rain in west Marion on Monday alone.
Later Tuesday, the National Weather Service released rainfall totals for the entire Hurricane Debby event that were recorded throughout the county. The amounts ranged from 3.97 inches at Lake George in the Ocala National Forest to 11.09 inches at a point in southwest Ocala.

As of 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, 5,909 customers remained without power. That included 5,105 from Duke Energy, 776 from Clay Electric, 26 from Ocala Electric Utility and two from SECO.
Tuesday afternoon, in a news release, Duke Energy said it planned to have 95% of customers in Citrus, Hernando, Lake, Levy, Marion and Sumter counties restored by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, and many sooner than that. The utility noted that it had power restored for 90% of customers within 24 hours of Debby making landfall.

Just before 10 a.m., the organization reported that multiple poles were broken “due to a tree falling on NE 10th Street power lines between NE 16th and NE 15th Avenue.” At the time, crews were on-site working to restore power and repair that damage.

Thousands of residents are without power in Marion County after Hurricane Debby brought high winds and rains that downed power lines and trees early this morning.
Hurricane Debby made landfall near Steinhatchee, Florida earlier this morning and is located just inland of the Florida Big Bend.
As of 8 a.m., the storm has maximum sustained winds of about 75 mph, having slightly weakened since 5 a.m. when winds were over 80 mph.
According to the National Hurricane Center, the hurricane is producing “life-threatening storm surge in portions of Florida” and major flooding across the southeastern United States.
Outage maps produced by Duke Energy and the Ocala Electric Utility show that there are thousands of individuals in the city and county that are currently without power. The same is true for large parts of northern Florida.
“There are trees and power lines down near Fort King Street. If you see downed trees or power lines, please stay safe and aware,” reads a statement from Ocala Electric Utility issued just before 5 a.m.
As of 7:50 a.m., OEU reported that it was addressing approximately 82 outages affecting 3,351 customers.
Ocala Fire Rescue and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management say they have been responding to reports of downed power lines and trees that have fallen across roadways and homes.
“As Marion County continues to experience severe weather, officials urge citizens to be aware of how to report damage and power outages,” reads a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Ocala often is a place to which coastal residents evacuate during storms. That is true of nursing home residents, as well. In a Facebook post, the Crystal River Health and Rehabilitation Center noted that "the Florida State Emergency Management Team gave a mandatory evacuation notice to the Crystal River area." Some residents were taken to the nursing home's sister facility in Ocala.

Heading north to help
A 28-member team from Florida Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 8, whose members are technical rescue specialists from Marion County Fire Rescue, Gainesville Fire Rescue and Ocala Fire Rescue, left Ocala on Sunday en route to Marianna, which is northwest of Tallahassee.
"They will be in place at a Logistics Staging Area in anticipation of the storms landfall," according to a Facebook post from Marion County Fire Rescue. "The team was tasked as a Type-4 USAR Task Force with Swift Water Rescue capabilities. Our task force deployed 4 boats and 13 vehicles with the ability to complete water rescues, search/rescue operations and structural damage assessments."

Ribbon cutting for newly completed Heritage Trail in Ocala postponed
The city of Ocala had planned a ribbon cutting for 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, but that has been postponed due to the weather.
"The Heritage Trail, located along the north side of State Road 40 (Silver Springs Boulevard) between NW Ninth Ave. and NW 11th Ave., is a project realized by the Community Redevelopment Agency’s West Ocala Advisory Committee in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation. This trail features decorative sidewalks, public art, and landscaping that honors the rich history and contributions of West Ocala’s citizens," the city said in a news release.

The College of Central Florida announced that it will close its Marion, Citrus and Levy County campuses on Monday, Aug. 5.
"Because of the threat of severe weather, particularly in CF’s coastal counties of Citrus and Levy, the college will close all sites," CF said in a Sunday afternoon news release. The Marion County Commission on Friday declared a local state of emergency in light of Invest 97L, which is expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico and affect Florida within the next several days.
County officials said the declaration, issued Friday morning in an emergency meeting held at the county commission chambers, is needed so mutual aid agreements can take effect and public safety is ensured.
The declaration was unanimous, 4-0, with one commissioner, Craig Curry, absent because he was out of town.

At the meeting, Preston Bowling, Marion County's emergency management director, told the county commission the system is not organized and its path is unknown at this point. In the event if it does come by, Bowling said, our area could receive multiple inches of rain. The heavy rains could come as early as Saturday night, Bowling said.
The city of Ocala's sandbag locations will begin operations at noon Friday and will remain open through Saturday until the sand is depleted. These locations are self-serve, and officials request that citizens limit their use to 10 bags per vehicle.
The county's sandbag stations will be open noon to 7 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Marion County Emergency Management Citizen’s Information Line is available Friday from noon until 8 p.m. and will re-open on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Officials ask residents to only call the number (352) 369-7500 for questions relating to the weather event. Authorities said if there's an emergency, call 911.
Residents can also use Alert Marion and can sign up at www.alertmarion.com.
Filling sandbags
County officials said they have enough supplies to provide 40,000 sandbags at all their locations combined. For the two Ocala locations, there are enough supplies for 500.
At Tuscawilla Park, several people were filling sandbags Friday afternoon.
John and Linda DeGroot said they have lived at their Ocala residence for 35 years.
Linda DeGroot said in the number of years they've been at the home, water has filled their backyard three to five times.
She said the sandbags will be placed in front of the garage door. In the meantime, she said, she's watching the weather report.
Near the DeGroots was Leonore Jacques and her husband, who was busy filling sandbags.
Jacques said they have lived in Belleview for 30 years and don't have a problem with flooding. However, she said they're preparing just in case.
